For me, ancient porn history begins with grainy Falcon loops dating to the early '80's. Though the original copyright information is missing, "Heavy Equipment" appears to have been made back in the Me Decade. This was an era when porn-makers apparently had mainstream movie aspirations. Thus, for those offended if a stud does anything with his mouth other than mate with another stud's lower regions, be forewarned that fifteen minutes of dialogue go by before you see your first boner.
And that, my friends, arrives in 3-D. Attached to THE Man of the '70's, Jack Wrangler. Unfortunately, without 3-D glasses (where do I get one of those blue-and-red pairs?!) Mr. Wrangler looks quite scary. But bear with it. This is one of the most luscious men of any decade.
Wrangler plays "Alter-Ego." You see, Chester, a nebbishy bookstore clerk (who shows promising, though never explored, twink potential) is one day given a book of magic. He invokes the spell for obtaining his heart's desire. The film makes an insightful comment on the gay male psyche. For though Chester is mooning over a hunky customer, his first magical result is that he turns into Wrangler. His pipsqueak exclamations are hilarious: "Wow! Look at this body!" and, when he finally paws his way down to Wrangler's cock, "It's beautiful!" (And it is.) It's a powerful fantasy, as the audience imagines both having Wrangler and BEING him as he jacks off to a nice orgasm.
Chester then goes prowling. The spell allows Chester to possess any man by taking his picture. It's not clear whether the spell hypnotizes the men or merely turns him into Wrangler, and then no hypnosis is needed.
The first victims are the Christy Twins at a bathroom glory hole. These lanky surfers with atrocious haircuts look too much like Dana Carvey characters to do anything for me. And does authentic incest take place before our eyes, or some very fine editing? I have my doubts, but you tell me. In any event, the twins definitely give it to Wrangler at both ends and then fling sperm-wads on his face as it contorts with as worshipful, agonistic an expression as ever managed by a stadium-rock star. Whew! The music in this sequence is worse than the haircuts.
Having practiced with the Christy's, Chester snaps some photos of the beloved customer. Then Chester appears in the customer's gym and, being Wrangler, merely has to purr, "I wanna get my rocks off."
Let me tell you about this customer. Known only as "Roger," this guy is the Playgirl/Cosmo ideal come to life. Tall, softly muscled (the steroid look wasn't in yet), and with a genuinely beautiful face unhindered by the era 'stache and 'do, he transcends time, place, and epidemics. God, to see him in 3-D slowly coming hither! Watching Roger with Wrangler - sucking his cock, then in a yogic 69 pose, then fucking Wrangler like a sacrificial bottom - I finally understand what an entire decade saw in men like these. They were magnificent, and their hormonal embrace of life comes through the gauzy nostalgia. I can imagine the historic impact of this coupling, and I am not sure which two stars of today would capture the essence of our times this well.
Chester continues to wear out Wrangler's dick by next "capturing" two other decade icons, Al Parker and Chris Adams, who I presume is also the Kurt Williams ("Mr. Nude America") proclaimed on the box. Their construction-site threesome ends with solid volleys of jizz and carefree grins.
There you have it, a somewhat short film with only four sex scenes. Some of the footage is badly damaged (though not the precious sex sequences). On the other hand, you get some of the most quintessential masculine stars of the '70's, and the 3-D gimmick is generally inoffensive. And for those who like body hair, you know you're in the right decade. That Roger's brunet ass and hamstrings are a wondrous sight.
And even the magic flying dildos had fur back then.
